University of the Sunshine Coast Resources Building

The new USC Resources building located on Sippy Downs Drive is the ‘front door’ building for north-eastern entrance to the campus. Landscape works include lush sub-tropical gardens utilising local plant species, visitor entry plaza, staff recreation areas and natural rock lined stormwater swale treatments with native reed plantings.

Kirwan State High School, Townsville

Plant selection suitable for the dry tropical environment of Townsville and the busy Kirwan State High School environment were important design considerations for this project. The landscape concept includes a forecourt entry space, a student congregation space below an existing fig tree, shaded foliage gardens and sun exposed perimeter gardens. Seating and bin enclosures are custom designed to inhibit pedestrian traffic through garden areas and across the root zone of the large fig tree.

Landscape design included a selection of plants with suitable smells, textures, food and avoidance of poisonous, highly allergenic and prickly /thorny plants.

Shalom College Bundaberg

A Landscape Master Plan is under development for the external spaces of the College so as to provide clear and cohesive direction for landscape as the schools building program evolves.

Landscape planning will define and assign function to underutilised spaces, ‘turning spaces into places’. Determining the appropriate use of space and how staff and students connect to and interact with these spaces is paramount to the success of the matured landscape and, ultimately, the enjoyment of the College grounds.

New York University in Abu Dhabi

A new 15.4 hectare campus site for NYU in Abu Dhabi currently under construction. Landscape design included the ground plane and four podium levels across the entire site. The heart of the campus accommodates the university buildings, staff and student accommodation and civic spaces, while the north site provides for a range of sporting facilities. Streets around the campus are planned as tree lined boulevards. Lively, urban and connected with its own identity the campus is enclave in and off the city of Abu Dhabi.

Gerard Canavan was project leader on this project, during his time with Dubai based landscape architecture firm Cracknell.

St. Joseph’s College, Toowoomba

Landscape design transformed the large asphalt quadrangle of St. Joseph’s college into a comfortable place for children and teachers to gather during lunch breaks and also for informal outdoor classes. The area now provides plenty of seating incorporated into retaining walls which address the slope across the site. Large shade trees are located in new garden beds, new pathways are aligned along travel path desire lines. Vehicular and pedestrian access areas are clearly delineated and bollard lights define these movements for night time safety and security.
